the w/joy project

After observing a local barista writing notes of encouragement on the side of outgoing coffee cups, I considered how I might design a similar opportunity for joy. My design process revealed the coffee sleeve as a vehicle through which my vision could be realized. I began to view coffee sleeves as gestures capable of delivering meaningful messages rather than purely functional products. Today, the peripheral focus of the project centers around the amplification of courageous writers. A form on the w/joy website allows anyone with an inspiring message to reach people in real life.

“I am a nurse at a small hospital in Sunnyvale, Texas. I had an idea to give my nurses a coffee sleeve with a message of encouragement or inspiration that they can find as a nice surprise while they are drinking their coffee. During these rough times as nurses we all need a little message of love!”

To date, over 4,000 people have received a w/joy note of inspiration through a partnership with Walnut Street Coffee in Edmonds, WA.

The w/joy project visual identity employs rotational symmetry to illustrate that joy is often found in unexpected places. The central flower anchors the composition and represents the simple actions we can take to uplift others.
